KTLA Kids Day LA program - 15th October 2005

Los Angeles
BK LA youth chapter participated in the Kids LA Day, celebrating youth and families for the 9th year. KTLA Kids Day L. A. takes place in Exposition Park, bringing families and service providers together on one day in one location in a fun and festive environment. Sponsored by KTLA (a media conglomerate) and produced by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, activities included free hands-on arts and crafts, sports and games, wall climbing, face painting, fitness center tours and self-evaluation, teen activity center and much more.BK LA youth hosted a booth at the festival to introduce youth to meditation and living values, which would be followed by the youth program on the coming weekend (22nd October '05). Sr.Lorien and Bro.Juan and Bro. Vivek, facilitated the booth's activities. Upon arrival to thefestival grounds, the atmosphere was energetic and buzzing, as one can see booths from various organizations being set-up and youth of all age groups checking them out. We set up the booth with beautiful hand-made posters and paintings and literature, as well as a special crafts corner set up by Sr Lorien, where kids could create their own virtue blessing cards.

As soon as we were done with setting up the booth, the crowd started pouring in. Kids of all the ages along with their parents started visiting the booth, looking for what exactly we folks were doing. Our plan was to tie a wrist band, those from the “Link of Love" project from San Francisco, to all those who were visiting the booth. The wrist band was simple but beautiful, and while tying we asked them to make a wish. Some of the kids closed their eyes and made long wishes and some were simply asking - "would the wish come true?" and our answer to that was …."If you believe it would!!!" Some of the kids were inspired by their parents to make a wish that their mom or dad be a millionaire! And some even asked what do I wish :) . It was a beautiful scene to watch them smile and make wish from their heart, a universal gesture indeed! After we tied the wrist bands, we had a surprise give away for girls! “A Crown”, which proved to be an instant hit. It was a beautiful, head band, which looked more like crown and we coronated nearly all the girls who visited the booth, including mothers, elder sisters, grandmothers andaunts! All those who received crown were truly excited and felt instant self-respect, which was visible by the expression on their face!

This crown idea was contributed by Bro .Dennis at the last minute and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the whole show. At one point of time, one can see most of the girls in the festival , having a crown on their head. We introduced parents who were accompanying their kids, to the programs which BKLA youth conducts and specifically the program happening for kids on 22nd Oct. They were also briefed about the various courses which are conducted at the center i.e. Positive Thinking, meditation courses and the Youth series. They were really excited to know about the positive thinking and meditation courses and expressed interest in visiting the center to learn more and participate. They were also happy to know that the center is also in near vicinity.Since morning to late afternoon, almost 600-700 people visited the booth (most of them kids) where every body got a wrist band tied on their wrists and girls were crowned. We would tell the girls, young and old, "you are the crowned princess", as their heads were gracefully dipped to accept their crown. ...I was just wondering who doesn't want to be a prince or princess, irrespective of how old they are. The crafts corner setup by Sr Lorien drew quite a bit of attention from various kids, who spend quite some time creating beautiful blessings, inspired by the Virtue Reality cards, using various colors and crafts paper.

The event was well attended by people form various backgrounds, with many being Latinos. Bro. Juan explained to them about various programs being conducted by the center in Spanish. Our booth was so popular that we didn't even get time to catch up with our lunch until Sr Carmen arrived with her son Kevin to help out and maintain the royal coronation ceremony without a gap!In the evening, we all felt too fulfilled to be able to serve in such an elevated way! This opportunity was unique due to the fact that we had the chance to serve such a large number of people from diverse backgrounds.

At the end of the day, we were content and thrilled, because all those who visited the booth went back with a twinkle in there eyes and smile on their face. It was truly a Golden Day!
